When one thinks of an eating disorder, one generally thinks of a person who is obsessed with being thin and will do anything to be that way.  In reality, this is a rather large category of disorders, some of which affect a person’s behavior with food only and others that also include an obsessive drive for thinness.  So, it is important to differentiate between a Feeding Disorder and an Eating Disorder because they may superficially appear to be similar but they have very different causes and treatments.

7 Types of Eating Disorders

  • Pica Eating Disorder: Pica Eating Disorder is characterized by eating non-nutritive or non-food substances such as paper, paste, dirt, hair, or clay.
  • Rumination Eating Disorder: Rumination Eating Disorder is characterized by repeated regurgitation of partially digested food that is either re-chewed, re-swallowed, or spit out for a period of at least one month.
  • Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID): Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), sometimes referred to as Selective Eating Disorder, is characterized by a lack of interest in food or an avoidance of certain types of food.
  • Anorexia Nervosa: Anorexia Nervosa is one of the most common types of eating disorders. Anorexia Nervosa is characterized by a definite restriction in caloric intake that results in low body weight.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by episodes of binge eating, or consuming a large quantity of food in one sitting.
  • Binge Eating Disorder: Binge eating disorder is defined by compulsive overeating — even when the person is no longer hungry or already feels uncomfortably full. In addition to eating large amounts of food, those with BED will also eat extremely quickly.
  • Eating Disorder NOS: Eating Disorder NOS is a diagnostic category for those who present with symptoms found in these disorders but don’t quite meet criteria. These symptoms cause significant impairments in functioning and are readily viewed by the person, or others, as being disordered.

What are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are behavioral conditions involving ongoing and severe disturbances in eating behaviors, and often are connected to distressing thoughts and emotions. Eating disorders are serious conditions that not only affect the physical but also the psychological and social functions.

Why Eating Disorder Worksheets?

Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions that can have serious physical, emotional, and social consequences. Individuals with eating disorders often experience negative thoughts and feelings about their body, food, and their ability to control their eating habits. They may engage in unhealthy behaviors such as restricting their food intake, bingeing and purging, or excessive exercise in an effort to manage their weight and body image.

Eating disorder worksheets are designed to help individuals who are struggling with an eating disorder, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder, to better understand their condition and develop strategies to overcome it. These worksheets can be an important part of an overall treatment plan for eating disorders and can be used in combination with therapy, medication, and other interventions.

Eating disorder worksheets can help individuals address the underlying psychological and emotional issues that contribute to their disordered eating behaviors. They may include exercises to help individuals identify and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs about their body and food, develop healthy coping strategies, and practice mindfulness and other relaxation techniques.

Finally, eating disorder worksheets can be a useful tool to help individuals with eating disorders take an active role in their recovery, gain insight into their condition, and develop the skills and strategies they need to manage their symptoms and improve their overall quality of life.
